High-temperature grease: choosing by the 120, 160, 200, 260 °C limits

This page sorts high-temperature greases by the continuous operating temperature limit stated in the TDS, with the thickener, the base oil and the H1 registration where there is one; the last section covers high-temperature chain oils for stenters, ovens and board presses. Send the temperature measured at the bearing housing and the machine type; a Hop Tien engineer selects the grease within 24 working hours.

Summary

"High-temperature grease" has no general meaning: each grease has a continuous operating limit stated in its TDS, and that limit depends on the base oil and the thickener. Lithium greases on mineral oil stop at 120–140 °C; polyurea and lithium complex greases on synthetic oil reach 160–200 °C; silicone/PTFE greases up to 220 °C; PFPE/PTFE greases 250–260 °C; above that, use an ester chain oil or solid lubricants. Choose a grease whose continuous limit is above the temperature measured at the bearing housing by a safety margin, keep the same thickener as the old grease or clean out when changing, and choose the base-oil viscosity by speed. The color of a grease says nothing about its temperature capability.

Temperatures per the TDS of each product. The bearing-housing temperature at steady running is markedly higher than the ambient temperature; measure with an infrared thermometer before choosing, do not use the chamber set-point.

Four things to check when choosing and changing a high-temperature grease

The continuous limit in the TDS must be above the temperature measured at the bearing housing by a safety margin: a grease running close to its limit dries out quickly and must be relubricated more often; the short-term limit in the TDS is for a few hours only. PFPE greases do not mix with other greases. For high-speed bearing greases see the separate page. Check the four points below before every grease selection or change:

Thickener and compatibility: polyurea, lithium, lithium complex, calcium sulfonate and PFPE/PTFE greases are not always miscible; when changing the thickener type, clean out the bearing or purge all of the old grease.
Base-oil viscosity versus speed and load: high-speed bearings need a low-viscosity base oil, heavily loaded low-speed bearings need a high viscosity; the NLGI grade is only the consistency and does not replace the base-oil viscosity.
Temperature and relubrication interval: bearing-housing temperature at steady running, the current relubrication interval and the quantity per shot; motors and machines under warranty use the grease on the manufacturer's list.
Filling: grease quantity by the free volume of the bearing, do not overfill; centralized lubrication systems need a grease that can be pumped at the machine-room temperature.
Before changing oil or grease. A different base oil (mineral/PAO ↔ PAG ↔ POE/ester) or a different grease thickener is never topped up: drain fully, replace the filter and flush as the TDS of the new grade requires; a Hop Tien engineer confirms the procedure for each machine.

High-temperature chain oils (up to 300 °C)

Chains on stenters, ovens, steamers, board presses and oven conveyors work at temperatures where grease no longer stays in place; use a low-volatility, low-residue synthetic ester chain oil.

TURMOFLUID 40 BEster/SHC · 270 mm²/s−20…300 °CStenter chains, dryers, oven conveyors; case study: 8-chamber stenter

TURMOWOODOIL 1 · 2 · 2-100Ester / SHC · 250 / 54 / 107 mm²/sup to 250 °CContinuous board presses: steel belts, chains, bending bars

When changing to an ester chain oil, deposits from the old oil loosen during the first weeks and can block the nozzles; heavily fouled chains should be cleaned first. Technical article: oven chain oil.

Cold-store, low-temperature chain oils (NSF H1 registered)

Conveyor chains, spiral freezers and packaging machines in food plants need a chain oil that flows at sub-zero temperatures and is H1 registered; this group is separate from the high-temperature chain oils above.

Frequently asked questions

Which grease for 200 °C?

A synthetic polyurea grease such as LUBCON TURMOGREASE N 2 MF (−40…200 °C) or N 4602 PLUS (−30…180 °C, short-term 220 °C); food plants use CASSIDA GREASE HTS 2 (NSF H1 registered, −30…200 °C). The 200 °C must be the temperature measured at the bearing housing, not the chamber set-point.

Is there a grease for 300 °C or 500 °C?

Lubricating greases stop at about 260 °C (PFPE/PTFE greases such as TURMOTEMP II/400 KL). Above that, the base oil evaporates completely and only solid lubricants remain, or an ester chain oil up to 300 °C (TURMOFLUID 40 B) is used. The 500 °C figure on some packaging is the temperature the remaining solids withstand, not the grease.

What color is high-temperature grease?

The color comes from additives and dyes and says nothing about temperature capability. Read the temperature range in the TDS and the thickener; two greases of the same color can differ by 100 °C in their limit.

How do I choose a high-temperature grease for an electric motor?

Measure the temperature at the bearing housing with the motor running steadily. For ordinary 2-pole and 4-pole motors, a synthetic polyurea grease (TURMOGREASE CAN 1002, N 2; −40…160 °C per TDS) has enough margin and is stable at that speed. Keep the same thickener as the factory grease if the motor is under warranty.

Do I have to dismantle the bearing when changing to a grease with a different thickener?

Preferably. Polyurea, lithium, calcium sulfonate and PFPE greases mixed together can soften or harden; the safe way is to dismantle and clean the bearing, or to purge continuously until all of the old grease is out and shorten the relubrication interval during the first month.

Are there high-temperature greases for food plants?

Yes. CASSIDA GREASE HTS 2 (NSF H1 registered, up to 200 °C), CASSIDA GREASE GTS 2 (NSF H1 registered, up to 170 °C, short-term 200 °C), LUBCON TURMOSYNTHGREASE ALN 4602 TF (H1 registered (InS), up to 180 °C), TURMSILON LMI 5000 (NSF H1 registered, silicone/PTFE, up to 220 °C), NYECORR 140 (NSF H1 registered, PFPE, up to 250 °C). Copies of the H1, Halal and Kosher registrations for each grade are sent within 24 working hours.

Temperature, viscosity and registration data are given per the manufacturer's TDS published on each product page; the actual conditions of the machine decide the final choice. Machine makes and trademarks named on this page belong to their respective manufacturers.
